PHYSICAL CONSERVATION
1 Khariah Masjid Kapitan Keling Funding for a Conservation Report & Technical Plan to upgrade the grounds around the Masjid Kapitan Keling Mosque. The dome and roof of MKK continues to suffer from leaks. A Conservation Report will help identify the problem, prescribe remedies and build capacity of local contractors to undertake the repair works. RM120,991.70
2 Loo Pun Hong This is a roof conservation project for The Carpenter's Guild, on Love Lane which needs repair. Open to the public, the Carpenter's Guild in Love Lane also suffers from leaks in their roof. This grant will help them remedy the problem. RM56,000 (80% of roof repair cost)
3 Seah Kok Heng This project involves the restoration of three dilapidated shop-houses on Jalan Pintal Tali. The restoration of the building will be based upon the adaptive re-use model where indigenous materials will be used as far as possible and conservation of the façade will be undertaken. This project will help conserve three dilapidated buildings in an area of George Town that badly needs such an intervention. The owner will be establishing a China Town museum and this restoration will improve the streetscape. RM191,809 (50% of roof & faade repair cost)
4 Persatuan Toishan Ningyang Wui Kwon This restoration work is mainly for the replacement of a central wooden beam of the roof and to replace the wooden carvings on the façade; and for the conservation of the outer walls of the temple, to remove the paint to its original brick surface, and also to repair some leaks on the roof. Toishan Ningyang Wui Kwon is on the Unesco list of important buildings in the George Town WHS. The repair and restoration works will help keep the building in good condition. RM98,560 (80% of roof & façde repair cost)
5 Sham Oay Leng Conservation of a shophouse on Muda Lane; to restore the façade and roofing to the original late Straits Eclectic Style, including retiling of the roof, lime wash on walls and restoration of original windows and doors. This project encourages private property owners to restore shophouse façades to their original form. RM38,025.00 (50% of roof & façde repair cost)
6 Rebecca Darothy Duckett The Restoration of Decorative Details on Frontage and Roof beam for 25 China Street This project completes a well-documented and model conservation project. RM27,500 (50% of roof & façde repair cost)
7 Ch'ng Cheng Ee The proposed restoration works for the Penang Sun Yat Sen Base would be to repair and replace the roof, and conservation work on the façade and five-foot way entrance. This building has special historic significance as the residence of Dr Sun Yat Sen, the father of modern China. The owner maintained the building and opened it for public viewing for the past 15 years. RM138,250 (50% of roof, façde and front porch conservation cost)
8 Koperasi Pelancongan Pulau Pinang This proposal is for restoration work of a Beca workshop and upgrade of 50 Becas for use by members of the co-operative. This project provides new opportunities to upgrade the "beca" as a heritage tourism product. The workshop will also provide jobs for aspiring mechanics. RM174,000 (12% of project quotation – covering workshop & beca upgrade)
9 Liga Muslim Pulau Pinang This project is to restore and repair the Liga Muslim Pulau Pinang building on Queen Street; to restore the façade of the two buildings to its original form and re-roofing. These two buildings are important to the Indian-Muslim community. The idea of restoring the façade of the buildings to their original form will improve the street-view immensely. RM500,000 (converted to matching grant)
10 Redcoat Developments Sdn Bhd Restoring the roof and faade of 28 Kg Malabar to its original form. Located in a depressed place in town, this project has a high chance of being a catalyst, encouraging other owners in the street to do proper conservation work. RM22,018.25 (50% of roofing and faade cost)
11 Anjuman Himayatul Islam This project is for conservation of the current façade by cleaning,repainting, and replacing the roofs. A community hall, giving free and subsidized tuition to school children, this project will be a good example of respect for the 1960s architectural legacy in George Town. RM72,000.00 (80% of faade conservation cost)
INTANGIBLE HERITAGE
12 Syarikat Areca Books To publish a book of photographs of Little India taken by Dr. Ooi Cheng Ghee in 1979. Photographs will also be used in an exhibit to be done in Little India. This book project fills an gap in the social history of Penang by focusing on the Indian community, especially in the 1960s. The book will also be a catalyst to bring the community together.
